Rhode Island Lawmakers Pass Bill to Allow Civil Unions for Gays

Less than a week after same-sex marriage was legalized in New York, the Rhode Island State Senate approved on Wednesday evening a bill allowing not marriage, but civil unions for gay couples, despite fierce opposition from gay-rights advocates who called the legislation discriminatory.

The bill, which already passed in the state's House of Representatives and which the governor said he will likely sign, would grant gay and lesbian couples most of the rights and benefits that Rhode Island provides married couples. It was offered as a compromise this spring after Gordon D. Fox, the openly gay speaker of the Democratic-controlled House, said he could not muster enough votes to pass a same-sex marriage bill.

Despite Fears, Owning Home Retains Allure, Poll Shows

Owning a house remains central to Americans' sense of well-being, even as many doubt their home is a good investment in after a punishing recession.

Nearly nine in 10 Americans say homeownership is an important part of the American dream, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. And they are keen on making sure it stays that way, for themselves and everyone else.

Support for helping people in financial distress over housing is higher than support for helping those without a job for many months.

Greek Parliament Votes in Favor of Austerity Plan, Staving Off Risk of Default

Greece's Parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of an austerity plan demanded by the country's foreign lenders before they would provide it with a financial rescue package and avert a debt crisis that could have shaken its European neighbors and economies throughout the world.

The austerity steps, which include wage cuts, tax increases and privatizations in a recession-starved country, were required to unlock the next installment of aid that the country needs to avoid default on its debts.

White House Announces Deal With Congress to Extend Trade Agreements

The White House said Tuesday that it had reached a deal with Congress to allow free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama to move forward after months of delay.

The deal includes funding through 2013 for a program that provides benefits, including cash payments, to workers whose jobs are shipped overseas. The administration had refused to submit the agreements to Congress until Republicans agreed to extend the program, known as trade adjustment assistance.
